    What is Shoulder Dislocation

Sports that involve raising your arms above your head, like swimming or throwing, and jobs that require you to use your shoulders a lot can cause your shoulder joint to slip out of place. This is called shoulder dislocation. It can be a partial dislocation (subluxation) or a complete dislocation, and it can cause pain and make your shoulder feel unstable.

Most often, the shoulder joint dislocates forward, but sometimes it can dislocate backward or downward.

    What Causes a Shoulder Dislocation

Shoulder dislocations are quite common in younger and older adults.

Younger adults often dislocate their shoulders because of sports injuries, while older adults may have looser shoulder joints that can cause them to dislocate after a fall.

Athletes of all ages who play sports that involve raising their arms above their head, like swimming or throwing, have a higher risk of shoulder dislocations.

Heavy laborers who use their shoulders a lot, especially hockey and football players, are also at a higher risk. Most shoulder dislocations are caused by injuries to the shoulder.

    Symptoms of Shoulder Dislocation

The most common symptoms of shoulder dislocation are pain and a feeling that your shoulder is unstable. You may also experience swelling, numbness, and bruising. In some cases, a shoulder dislocation can cause tears in the ligaments or tendons around the shoulder or damage to the nerves in the area.

Shoulder Dislocation Diagnosis at Our Houston Clinic

Dr. Brown, our shoulder joint dislocation specialist in Houston, will start by asking you about your medical history. So, try to be as transparent with him as possible to tell him if you’ve ever dislocated your shoulder before.

Once he understands your situation, Dr. Brown will examine your shoulder to see how well you can move it and how strong it is. The shape of your shoulder can also help diagnose a dislocation. For example, your shoulder may look square when your upper arm bone is out of place.

To confirm the diagnosis, our orthopedic surgeon will take an X-ray. For serious shoulder injuries, he may also order additional tests like an MRI and a nerve evaluation.

Dr. Barrett Brown is a very fine physician. He is also a friend. While he is a surgeon he said this about my horribly painful shoulder. First we will try an injection performed by our specialist using ultra sound. (It was painless.) If that does not relieve your pain we will do a cat scan to evaluate the rotator cuff.

I have, unfortunately, been a frequent visitor to the Fondren Orthopedic clinic as I cannot seem to stay on my feet 😅. My most recent experience with Dr. Brown has been nothing short of excellent. From the initial exam to surgery and then the follow up and discussion of how I am healing have been extremely thorough and communication has been a 10. I would definitely recommend.

    Treatment Options for Shoulder Dislocation

Most often, a shoulder dislocation is treated by putting the shoulder joint back in place, which is called a closed reduction. Our surgeon will carefully move your upper arm bone back into the socket, and you should feel immediate relief from the pain.

You may need to wear a sling or other support for a few days after the treatment to keep your shoulder still. Dr. Brown will also give you exercises to do at home to help your shoulder heal. If your shoulder keeps dislocating, you may need shoulder dislocation surgery in Houston to repair the damaged tissues.
