What is a Proximal Humerus Fracture

The top end of your arm bones contributes to the shoulder joint, and it is called the proximal humerus. When you go through a traumatic event, like falling down, the humerus is susceptible to injury. Since this long bone of the arm is close to other important structures, such as the rotator cuff muscles, a proximal humerus fracture can be concerning.

The position of your arm and body at the time of the accident will determine the fracture and the treatment it requires. Proximal humerus fractures are not limited to any age or gender, and they can occur as a result of forceful collisions, car accidents, etc.

Signs of a Proximal Humerus Fracture

You might be wondering if your pain is an actual fracture or just a minor concern. If you are dealing with a proximal humerus, you will notice pain, bruising, deformity in the upper arm, restricted shoulder movement, and numbness and tingling in the arm, forearm, or hand. Our team looks forward to helping you with your proximal humerus fracture in Houston, and we will conduct a proper diagnosis to choose the correct treatment.

    Questions About Proximal Humerus Fracture?

    Diagnosis

When you visit us for your proximal humerus fracture, we will assess it thoroughly via physical examination and diagnostic imaging. We will take an X-ray to confirm the fracture and suggest MRI or CT scans if we suspect soft tissue damage.

    Types of Proximal Humerus Fractures

The fracture might be displaced or nondisplaced. Our orthopedic surgeon will examine the affected area to determine which type of proximal humerus fracture you have and treat it accordingly. There are usually two types of proximal humerus fractures we treat in Houston:

    1. Nondisplaced: If you have a fracture where the piece of bone is separated but they are still in the position, you might be dealing with a nondisplaced fracture of the proximal humerus. It typically does not require surgery!
    2. Displaced: The fracture not only separates the bones, but they are out of position as well. If you have a displaced proximal humerus fracture, you may require surgery.

Dr. Barrett Brown is a very fine physician. He is also a friend. While he is a surgeon he said this about my horribly painful shoulder. First we will try an injection performed by our specialist using ultra sound. (It was painless.) If that does not relieve your pain we will do a cat scan to evaluate the rotator cuff.

I have, unfortunately, been a frequent visitor to the Fondren Orthopedic clinic as I cannot seem to stay on my feet 😅. My most recent experience with Dr. Brown has been nothing short of excellent. From the initial exam to surgery and then the follow up and discussion of how I am healing have been extremely thorough and communication has been a 10. I would definitely recommend.

Our Treatments for a Proximal Humerus Fracture in Houston

After your diagnosis is confirmed, our orthopedist will treat the fracture using conservative or surgical treatments, depending on the cause. They might recommend immobilizing your arm by putting it in a sling, physical therapy, and other approaches to treat the fractured bone without surgery. If you require surgery, however, we will fix the multiple fragments using plates, screws, or pins. If the injury is severe, shoulder replacement surgery may be required!
