    What is a Patella Tear

Your patella tendon works with quadriceps muscles and quadriceps tendon, allowing your knee to straighten out. When the tendon that connects the kneecap (patella) to the shinbone (tibia) ruptures or undergoes damage, it causes a patella tear.

Many factors are responsible for patella tears, such as sports injuries, a direct blow to the knee, awkward landing on your feet, inflamed patellar tendon, and diseases. You can consult our orthopedic surgeon for your patellar tear by visiting us in Houston!

Signs You Have a Patella Tear

When you have a patella tear, the patella loses its anchoring hold on the tibia, and the patella might move up to the thigh as the quadriceps muscle contracts. You will realize that you can no longer straighten your knee, and it buckles when you stand.

Pain, swelling, bruising, cramping, and a tearing or popping sensation also take place. There are two types of tears that can form: partial and complete tears. When you have a partial tear, some of the fibers in your tendon are torn, but there is no damage to the soft tissue. A complete tear, however, disrupts the soft tissue into two pieces.

You can consult our orthopedic specialist if you notice signs of a patella tear and you live in Houston. They will identify the issue by incorporating physical exams, X-rays, and MRI scans, and reviewing your medical history.

Treatment for Patella Tear at Our Houston Office

We utilize both surgical and non-surgical techniques to treat a patella tear. For non-surgical treatment, we usually recommend immobilizing the knee using splints or braces. In addition, physical therapy helps increase the range of motion and regain strength in your knee.

If nonsurgical treatment does not work, we can reattach the torn tendon to the kneecap in a surgical treatment. We perform the surgery under anesthesia, followed by making an incision on the front of the knee to expose the torn tendon. Next, we drill holes in the patella and tie strong sutures to the tendon, which are then used to pull the torn edge of the tendon back to its normal position on your kneecap.

Sometimes, the damage is so severe that the patellar tendon might be quite short, making it challenging to reattach it. No need to worry! Our expert surgeon will attach a tissue taken from a donor to lengthen the tendon and treat your damaged patella!

Dr. Barrett Brown is a very fine physician. He is also a friend. While he is a surgeon he said this about my horribly painful shoulder. First we will try an injection performed by our specialist using ultra sound. (It was painless.) If that does not relieve your pain we will do a cat scan to evaluate the rotator cuff.

I have, unfortunately, been a frequent visitor to the Fondren Orthopedic clinic as I cannot seem to stay on my feet 😅. My most recent experience with Dr. Brown has been nothing short of excellent. From the initial exam to surgery and then the follow up and discussion of how I am healing have been extremely thorough and communication has been a 10. I would definitely recommend.
