    What is Knee Arthroscopy

Knee arthroscopy is a minimally invasive technique that allows doctors to see the inside of your knee joint. It’s like a keyhole surgery where a small camera and tiny surgical tools are inserted through small cuts. This helps doctors diagnose and repair any damage within or around your knee.

Many patients and surgeons prefer arthroscopy of the knee in Houston because it has a lower risk of infection and bleeding, and it often causes less pain and inflammation after surgery.

    Indications for Knee Arthroscopy

The knee joint can be easily injured. Here are some common knee problems that may require arthroscopic knee treatment in Houston:

    • Torn Meniscus: A tear in the cartilage that cushions the knee joint.
    • Torn OR Damaged Cruciate Ligament: Tears in the ligaments that help stabilize the knee.
    • Torn Pieces of Articular Cartilage: Damage to the smooth cartilage that covers the ends of the bones in the knee.
    • Inflamed Synovial Tissue: Swelling and irritation of the tissue that lines the inside of the knee joint.
    • Misalignment of Patella: When the kneecap is out of place.
    • Baker’s Cyst: A fluid-filled sac that forms behind the knee.
    • Certain Fractures of the Knee Bones: Breaks in the bones of the knee.

    Questions About Knee Arthroscopy?

What Should You Expect from the Knee Arthroscopic Surgery in Houston

Before your surgery, our surgeon, Dr. Brown will discuss the type of anesthesia that’s best for you. Most people who have knee arthroscopy in Houston can go home shortly after the procedure. However, make sure you arrange for someone to drive you home because you’ll be under the influence of anesthesia and need to rest your knee.

During the surgery, Dr. Brown will clean your knee joint with a sterile solution. This makes it easier to see the inside of your knee through the arthroscope. Our surgeon will then insert the arthroscope into your knee to examine the problem.

If your problem can be treated with minimally invasive surgery, our Houston knee arthroscopy specialist will make small incisions to insert the necessary surgical tools. The entire procedure is done using these tools. Once the surgery is complete, our surgeon will carefully remove the tools and close the incisions.

    After the Surgery

Most people who have knee joint arthroscopy can go home on the same day in Houston. Recovery time depends on the type of surgery. Simple procedures usually heal quickly, while more complicated procedures take longer. However, recovery from arthroscopy is always faster than recovery from open knee surgery.

Dr. Brown will prescribe pain medication to help with pain but you may also need to use crutches or a knee brace for a few weeks. A rehabilitation program can help you recover successfully. Physical therapy exercises will help restore movement and strengthen the muscles in your leg and knee.

Dr. Barrett Brown is a very fine physician. He is also a friend. While he is a surgeon he said this about my horribly painful shoulder. First we will try an injection performed by our specialist using ultra sound. (It was painless.) If that does not relieve your pain we will do a cat scan to evaluate the rotator cuff.

I have, unfortunately, been a frequent visitor to the Fondren Orthopedic clinic as I cannot seem to stay on my feet 😅. My most recent experience with Dr. Brown has been nothing short of excellent. From the initial exam to surgery and then the follow up and discussion of how I am healing have been extremely thorough and communication has been a 10. I would definitely recommend.
