What is Anatomic Total Shoulder Replacement

Anatomic shoulder replacement is a surgical procedure designed to repair a damaged shoulder joint. During surgery, damaged parts of the shoulder, such as the ball and socket, are replaced with artificial components that closely match the natural shape of the shoulder.

This procedure is best suited for people with a healthy rotator cuff and limited damage to the joint. Unlike traditional shoulder replacements, anatomic shoulder replacement aims to preserve the natural movement of the shoulder, leading to several benefits.

Benefits of Anatomic Total Shoulder Replacement

Anatomic shoulder replacement offers numerous benefits. The implants used in this procedure are designed to mimic the natural shape of the shoulder joint, allowing for a wider range of motion compared to traditional replacements.

By preserving the surrounding tissues, such as the rotator cuff, this surgery reduces the risk of the shoulder joint becoming unstable or dislocating after the procedure.

Additionally, anatomic shoulder replacements performed at our Houston clinic often last longer and provide better long-term function compared to traditional replacements.

Last but not least, the primary goal of this surgery is to relieve pain caused by conditions like osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Questions About Anatomic Total Shoulder Replacement Surgery?

What is Dr. Brown’s Surgical Approach for an Anatomic Total Shoulder Replacement

Before surgery, our total shoulder replacement specialist in Houston, TX, Dr. Brown, will conduct a thorough examination and may order X-rays or MRIs to assess your shoulder condition. You will be given general anesthesia to ensure comfort during the procedure.

Dr. Brown will then make a small incision to access the shoulder joint. He will remove damaged bone and cartilage and implant artificial components to replace them. If necessary, he will also repair any damage to the rotator cuff. Once the implants are secured, the incision will be closed, and you will receive instructions for post-operative care.

What Recovery from an Anatomical Shoulder Replacement Looks Like

After your surgery, Dr. Brown will work with a physical therapist to create a personalized recovery plan. This plan will help you regain strength and flexibility and reduce pain in your shoulder.

You may need to wear a sling for a short time to protect your shoulder while it heals. Our surgeon will prescribe pain medication to manage any discomfort. As your shoulder heals, you’ll gradually start physical therapy exercises to improve your range of motion, strength, and coordination.

Regular check-ups with Dr. Brown, one of Houston’s leading anatomic total shoulder replacement experts, are important to monitor your progress and promote optimal healing.

Dr. Barrett Brown is a very fine physician. He is also a friend. While he is a surgeon he said this about my horribly painful shoulder. First we will try an injection performed by our specialist using ultra sound. (It was painless.) If that does not relieve your pain we will do a cat scan to evaluate the rotator cuff.

I have, unfortunately, been a frequent visitor to the Fondren Orthopedic clinic as I cannot seem to stay on my feet 😅. My most recent experience with Dr. Brown has been nothing short of excellent. From the initial exam to surgery and then the follow up and discussion of how I am healing have been extremely thorough and communication has been a 10. I would definitely recommend.
