    What is Lateral Collateral Ligament

The knee is stabilized by a set of ligaments, and lateral collateral ligament, or LCL, is one of them. It is a thin set of tissues located on the outer side of the knee, and it connects the thigh bone to lower leg bone. LCL provides stability to your knee and prevents it from sidewise rotation.

Trauma, sports injuries, or direct blows to the knee can cause tears in the LCL, causing pain, swelling, and instability in the joint. Our orthopedic surgeon will thoroughly assess your knee to determine which treatment you require.

Our LCL Reconstruction and Repair Services in Houston

We strive to provide our patients with efficient solutions for their orthopedic concerns. If you are dealing with a damaged or torn LCL, we will properly diagnose the issue and proceed with lateral collateral ligament reconstruction or repair when you visit us in Houston. Here is an insight into the treatments we provide:

    1. Nonsurgical Treatments: We attempt to incorporate nonsurgical interventions if your LCL is not severely torn, which include rest, ice, elevation, bracing, and physical therapy. This way, you can reduce swelling, and improve flexibility in your knee while strengthening it.
    2. Surgical Repair: If nonsurgical interventions fail to alleviate the symptoms, surgical treatment might be required. Surgical LCL repair usually involves stitching the torn ends of the ligament back together.
    3. Reconstruction: If the LCL tear is severe or the injury is older than 3 weeks, you may need to undergo reconstruction surgery. Our orthopedic surgeon will replace the torn ligament with a healthy tissue or graft, which is taken from a tissue bank (allograft) or from your own body (autograft). We will make a small incision on the lateral side of the knee and drill the thigh bone and fibula to form tunnels. Then, we pass the tendon grafts through the tunnels to fix them with the help of screws, metal staples, or large sutures. You may have to wear a knee brace for 6 to 8 weeks after the procedure!

Questions About Lateral Collateral Ligament Reconstruction / Repair?

    Postoperative Care

Once your lateral collateral ligament reconstruction or repair with us is complete, our Houston team will instruct you on postoperative care for a safe recovery.

You will be instructed to avoid putting weight on your knee as it heals. Other than this, you can incorporate ice, rest, elevation, knee brace, and medications for pain and discomfort. Your recovery will depend on the procedure, age, severity of the injury, and your overall health.

Physical therapy for a few months is also important for strengthening your knee and improving flexibility.

Dr. Barrett Brown is a very fine physician. He is also a friend. While he is a surgeon he said this about my horribly painful shoulder. First we will try an injection performed by our specialist using ultra sound. (It was painless.) If that does not relieve your pain we will do a cat scan to evaluate the rotator cuff.

I have, unfortunately, been a frequent visitor to the Fondren Orthopedic clinic as I cannot seem to stay on my feet 😅. My most recent experience with Dr. Brown has been nothing short of excellent. From the initial exam to surgery and then the follow up and discussion of how I am healing have been extremely thorough and communication has been a 10. I would definitely recommend.
