    AC Joint Anatomy and Function

The AC joint is a complicated part of the shoulder where the acromion, a bony part of the scapula, meets the end of the clavicle. Several ligaments, like the acromioclavicular ligament, coracoclavicular ligament, and conoid ligament, keep the joint stable and stop it from moving too much.

    AC Joint Injuries

Falls or direct hits to the shoulder often injure the AC joint. The injury can be mild, like a sprain, or severe, like a complete dislocation. You might feel pain, swelling, tenderness, and a noticeable bump on your shoulder.

    Questions About Acromioclavicular Ligament Reconstruction?

    What is Acromioclavicular Joint Reconstruction

Often, shoulder separation doesn’t require surgery. However, if the AC joint is severely separated, our AC joint surgery specialist in Houston may repair it surgically or use a tissue graft to fix the damaged ligaments. This graft may come from your own body (autograft) or a donor (allograft) and can be sourced from the anterior tibia or hamstring. Alternatively, he might use artificial material that doesn’t break down to graft the damaged ligaments.

Fixing the AC joint in its original position helps create a stable, safe joint that functions properly.

    Benefits of AC Ligament Repair

Shoulder ligament surgery performed by our orthopedic surgeon in Houston can have several benefits, including less pain, better range of motion, more stable shoulders, and a better appearance. By fixing the damaged ligaments, the surgery can help people return to their normal activities and prevent further injuries.

Dr. Barrett Brown is a very fine physician. He is also a friend. While he is a surgeon he said this about my horribly painful shoulder. First we will try an injection performed by our specialist using ultra sound. (It was painless.) If that does not relieve your pain we will do a cat scan to evaluate the rotator cuff.

I have, unfortunately, been a frequent visitor to the Fondren Orthopedic clinic as I cannot seem to stay on my feet 😅. My most recent experience with Dr. Brown has been nothing short of excellent. From the initial exam to surgery and then the follow up and discussion of how I am healing have been extremely thorough and communication has been a 10. I would definitely recommend.

Surgical Treatment Options for AC Joint Injury in Houston

There are several methods to repair the AC ligament, depending on the severity of the injury and Dr. Brown’s recommendations. Some common surgical treatment options we offer for AC joint surgery at our Houston clinic include:

    Coracoclavicular Ligament Reconstruction

This method repairs or replaces the coracoclavicular ligament, a strong ligament that helps stabilize the AC joint.

    Coracoid Transfer

This procedure moves the coracoid process, a bony part of the scapula, to the clavicle and attaches it with screws or stitches.

    Allograft Reconstruction

This method uses a donor ligament to replace the damaged ligaments.

    Recovery Process

After AC ligament reconstruction, recovery usually involves several weeks of keeping the shoulder still in a sling, followed by a gradual rehabilitation program.

Physical therapy is important for restoring shoulder strength, range of motion, and function. The rehabilitation program may include exercises to improve flexibility, strengthen the shoulder muscles, and restore normal joint mechanics.
