Shoulder Dislocation Treatment in Houston

From daily tasks to sports, your shoulder is a highly mobile joint that enables you to perform a wide range of activities. So, when your shoulder pops out of its socket, you may experience a moment of intense pain and fear. Simply putting it back into the socket may not be enough. Structural damage can set the stage for long-term instability and recurring dislocations, all of which can threaten your athletic career or active lifestyle.

Dr. Barrett S. Brown is one of Houston’s premier specialists in shoulder joint dislocation. Whether you compete for one of Houston’s professional sports teams or simply enjoy playing catch in the backyard, our team is here to restore your shoulder to absolute stability so you can return to the activities you love with confidence.

Understanding Shoulder Instability: Why It Happens

The shoulder is a ball-and-socket joint connecting the arm to the torso. With a rounded head that sits in a shallow socket, this design allows for remarkable mobility. Yet, that same flexibility makes the joint vulnerable to instability when the supporting structures become damaged or loose. Dislocations occur when the upper arm bone pops out of the socket.

Shoulder dislocations fall into two categories:

    1. Traumatic dislocations: One of the most common sports shoulder injuries, traumatic dislocations result from sudden, high-impact events such as football tackles or a collision on the basketball court.
    2. Chronic instability: This issue develops in individuals with naturally loose ligaments, particularly common among swimmers or dancers who may be part of Houston’s vibrant performing arts organizations.

Without proper treatment, the risk of recurrence is significant. Repeated dislocations can lead to progressive joint damage and increase the likelihood of early-onset arthritis in the shoulder.

Conservative Treatment Options for Shoulder Dislocation

If this is your first time experiencing a dislocation and there is no significant structural damage, conservative care often provides effective results. Once Dr. Brown has diagnosed the dislocation, our Houston clinic offers comprehensive nonsurgical treatments, including:

    • Closed reduction: The shoulder joint is carefully repositioned back into the socket, providing immediate pain relief.
    • Immobilization: You may need to wear a sling or other support for several days to allow initial healing.
    • Home exercises: Gentle movements are recommended to maintain flexibility during recovery.
    • Physical therapy: Structured rehabilitation strengthens the surrounding muscles to support joint stability.

Dr. Brown closely monitors patients throughout the conservative treatment process, adjusting the plan as needed based on individual progress and response.

    Questions About Shoulder Dislocation Treatment?

    Minimally Invasive Dislocated Shoulder Surgery

For individuals with recurrent dislocations, surgery may be the best solution to achieve lasting stability. Dr. Brown will discuss your recovery goals and recommend shoulder dislocation surgery if you participate in high-demand sports or activities that require optimal shoulder stability, or if you experience:

    • Multiple dislocations despite conservative care
    • Significant ligament or labrum damage
    • Bone loss from the socket rim

Surgical Techniques Available From Our Houston Specialist

Dr. Brown specializes in shoulder arthroscopy, a minimally invasive surgery for dislocated shoulders that can improve shoulder stabilization. Using tiny cameras and specialized instruments, he repairs damaged structures through small incisions, minimizing tissue trauma and reducing post-operative discomfort. This outpatient procedure may also allow you to go home the same day as your surgery.

Two primary surgical techniques to address shoulder instability include:

    1. Arthroscopic or open Bankart repair: Reattaches the torn cartilage rim and ligaments to the shoulder socket using suture anchors
    2. Latarjet procedure: Transfers a piece of bone with attached muscle to the front of the socket, providing both a physical barrier and dynamic stability for cases with significant bone loss

Dr. Barrett Brown is a very fine physician. He is also a friend. While he is a surgeon he said this about my horribly painful shoulder. First we will try an injection performed by our specialist using ultra sound. (It was painless.) If that does not relieve your pain we will do a cat scan to evaluate the rotator cuff.

I have, unfortunately, been a frequent visitor to the Fondren Orthopedic clinic as I cannot seem to stay on my feet 😅. My most recent experience with Dr. Brown has been nothing short of excellent. From the initial exam to surgery and then the follow up and discussion of how I am healing have been extremely thorough and communication has been a 10. I would definitely recommend.

    The Recovery Process

Returning to full activity requires patience and commitment to our recommended rehabilitation protocol. Recovery progresses through distinct phases:

    • Protection: Your arm remains in a sling for up to four weeks to protect the surgical repair. Rest is essential during this period as the tissues begin to heal.
    • Motion and strengthening: Physical therapy introduces range-of-motion and strengthening exercises, rebuilding flexibility and foundational strength without stressing the repair.
    • Sport-specific training: Advanced rehabilitation incorporates drills specific to your sport or activity, whether you’re an athlete, sports enthusiast or performing artist.

The goal is returning to full mobility with confidence, knowing your shoulder can withstand the demands you place on it.
