    What is Shoulder Arthroscopy

Arthroscopy is known to be a less invasive way to examine and treat joint problems. Shoulder arthroscopy involves using a small, camera-equipped instrument called an arthroscope. The camera sends images to a computer screen, allowing our shoulder arthroscopy specialist in Houston, Dr. Brown, to see inside your shoulder clearly.

    • Shoulder impingement.
    • Rotator cuff tear.

    • Biceps rupture.
    • Damaged cartilage or ligaments.

    • Arthritis of the collarbone.

    Questions About Shoulder Arthroscopy?

    Benefits of Shoulder Arthroscopy

Shoulder arthroscopy provides several benefits compared to open surgery.

    • You’ll likely experience less pain after arthroscopy.
    • There are usually fewer complications associated with arthroscopy.
    • You won’t have to stay in the hospital for a long time.
    • You’ll be able to get back to your normal activities sooner.

    Shoulder Arthroscopy Procedure

Dr. Brown performs shoulder arthroscopy in Houston under general or regional anesthesia, so you’ll be asleep or numb during the procedure.

You’ll be positioned on your side or in a semi-sitting position. We will inject sterile fluid into your shoulder to make the area easier to see. Then, we will make a small incision and insert the arthroscope. The arthroscope has a camera that sends images to a monitor, allowing our surgeon to see inside your shoulder.

Through other small incisions, we will insert surgical instruments to repair the damage. After the surgery, we will remove the instruments and close the incision with stitches or bandages.

    Postoperative Care for Shoulder Arthroscopy

After the surgery, Dr. Brown will monitor your healing process. Keep in mind that the small incisions will take a few days to heal, and we will replace the dressing with simple bandages.

Your recovery time depends on the specific problem we treat. Our shoulder arthroscopy expert in Houston will prescribe pain medication to keep you comfortable, and you will have to wear a sling for a short time.

Dr. Barrett Brown is a very fine physician. He is also a friend. While he is a surgeon he said this about my horribly painful shoulder. First we will try an injection performed by our specialist using ultra sound. (It was painless.) If that does not relieve your pain we will do a cat scan to evaluate the rotator cuff.

I have, unfortunately, been a frequent visitor to the Fondren Orthopedic clinic as I cannot seem to stay on my feet 😅. My most recent experience with Dr. Brown has been nothing short of excellent. From the initial exam to surgery and then the follow up and discussion of how I am healing have been extremely thorough and communication has been a 10. I would definitely recommend.

Is Physical Therapy Necessary After Shoulder Arthroscopy

Even though shoulder arthroscopy is less invasive than open surgery, physical therapy is still important for your recovery. Our orthopedic surgeon will create a personalized exercise plan to strengthen your shoulder and help you heal faster.

Will My Shoulder Arthroscopy Results Be Permanent

Most repairs performed by Dr. Brown are permanent. However, everyone’s recovery is different, and additional injuries or physical activity after surgery can sometimes cause problems again.

If you are worried about reinjury, talk to our surgeon. Strengthening your muscles can help prevent future shoulder problems.

Risks and Complications of Shoulder Arthroscopy

Possible complications of shoulder arthroscopy include infections, bleeding, damage to nerves or blood vessels, and delayed healing. In some cases, your shoulder may become stiff after surgery. That is why, in order to prevent this, it’s important to follow your physical therapy plan.
